#12: An Iconic Hairstyle
If you’re familiar with the background of the Star Wars films, you may be aware that George Lucas frequently cites two major inspirations for his film series: samurai films and westerns, specifically stories of marshals and other lawmen in the Old West. But it turns out there’s another unexpected source for Princess Leia’s infamous hair.

Honestly, I always thought that her hair was an odd choice, but I figured that the stylists who worked on the movie came up with it as something that would look interesting and otherworldly. So I’m fascinated to find out that it actually was inspired by something from our own earth history! Tying her hair visually to guerrilla fighters from the Mexican Revolution is a neat shorthand for showing us that she is a rebel who is fighting for freedom.
