The Most Adopted Pets in Shelters in 2021

February 20, 2022 by Jessica Meyer

Animals are now one of the most important parts of a person’s life and people really want to adopt them and love them as their own. All across the world, there are many organizations dedicated to providing excellent care for these animals. But with the number of pets increasing in numbers, it is very hard to take care of them all.

That’s why pet shelters have been formed to help control overpopulation and save more lives.

With most shelters overcrowded or running out of space for the animals, there is a need for more shelters to be formed and they would be able to help the existing ones save more lives.

According to statistics, there is an estimate of 2.7 million homeless cats and dogs in the United States alone, which means about 5 animals per every 1000 Americans. Most of these animals are strays or abandoned pets.

However, in the next five years, the number is expected to double at least with more pets being abandoned or lost each day than adopted out. For that reason, there will be a big increase in the number of pet shelters needed in at least one country alone in 2021 compared to what’s available now in 2016.

Hence, the number of pet shelters will need to be increased in order to accommodate all these animals. For that reason, the most adopted pet shelter is expected to change over the next five years with one country expected to lead this.

So with all that being considered, what animals are the most adopted pets from shelters all over the world?

According to a study, the most adopted pets from animal shelters in 2021 are going to be dogs and cats. By early 2016, about 2.7 million dogs and cats were already residing in US pet shelters with only around 620 thousand being adopted as of then.

In just five years, pet shelters are expected to accommodate around 2.4 million dogs and cats which would mean that about half of rescued pets will not be adopted in the near future.

So if the number of abandoned animals really doubles, then more than 1.2 million dogs and cats may need to be cared for in just one year making pet shelters very overcrowded.

In conclusion, there is definitely an increased need for pet shelters all over the world. The most adopted pet is expected to be dogs and cats even though we’re predicted that almost half of them will still not be adopted.
