#16: Mr. Furley’s Nervous Energy Was Heavily Inspired by Barney Fife
Many of Mr. Furley’s most recognizable mannerisms were drawn directly from Don Knotts’s earlier, iconic role as Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. The exaggerated reactions, jumpy movements, and high-strung physical comedy were all familiar territory for Knotts.
Rather than reinventing himself completely, Knotts leaned into what audiences already loved. By channeling elements of Barney Fife into Mr. Furley, he gave Three’s Company a character who felt instantly funny and recognizable, while still fitting into the show’s fast-paced, farcical world.
