#33: Mary Ann Was Basically Dorothy With a Tropical Twist
Mary Ann wasn’t just a wholesome Kansas farm girl by coincidence—she was intentionally modeled after Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. Both characters came from Kansas, wore gingham, sported pigtails, and radiated that same grounded innocence that made audiences instantly adore them.

The resemblance wasn’t just visual. Like Dorothy, Mary Ann was the voice of common sense amid chaos, offering heart, kindness, and practicality while everyone else went a little wild. It gave the show a familiar anchor, making Mary Ann feel like a comforting friend viewers already knew from somewhere over the rainbow.
