#16: The Castaways’ Magic Radio Was a Modified Packard-Bell
That trusty radio you see in almost every episode started life as a Packard-Bell AM Radio, Model AR-851. To make it look more “island-tech,” the prop team added a shiny silver handle and a dramatic telescoping antenna—even though AM radios don’t use those antennas at all.
The creative tweak was purely for believability. Viewers needed a reason to accept that the castaways could tune in news from civilization while stranded in the Pacific. The added antenna did the trick, helping sell the idea that their little radio could reach far, far beyond the island’s shores.
