Back at the station, Melissa stared at her phone, thumbs trembling over the keyboard. Every word felt loaded. “Hey,” she finally typed. “It’s been a while. Want to grab a drink?”

She stared at the blinking cursor for a full minute. Once she hit send, there was no undoing it. This wasn’t about nostalgia or closure. This was baiting a possible criminal. She squeezed her eyes shut, took a breath, and tapped send. The message flew off into the unknown—and with it, the beginning of a dangerous game.
