#32: New York
Minimum wage: $15.00–$16.00 (varies by region)
New York’s wealthy are often concentrated in Manhattan, affluent suburbs, and select upstate enclaves. High incomes come from finance, tech, media, real estate, and corporate leadership. Many enjoy luxury apartments or estates, private education, global travel, and access to world-class culture, dining, and professional networks.

On the lower-income side, many New Yorkers work in food service, retail, cleaning, and care roles. Housing costs dominate budgets, especially in and around New York City. Even full-time minimum-wage work may require shared housing, long commutes, or multiple jobs to cover basic living expenses.
