#17: Woman Working on a Typewriter, 1948
Nowadays, we can type out long texts on our touch-screen phones and write entire manuscripts on our paper-thin laptops. It’s hard to imagine what came before all this amazing technology. Of course, before laptops, computers, and smartphones, we had typewriters. This 1948 photograph by Paul S. Henderson shows a woman typing on a vintage typewriter.

That typewriter is an absolute beast! Imagine typing up meeting minutes or a letter of correspondence on that thing. One mistake and you would have to start all over again. However, this machine isn’t just any old typewriter. This woman is working on a bookkeeping machine. We don’t doubt that special training was required to operate this thing. It looks extremely complicated.
