#15: Red Barn (1961-1988)
Red Barn was known for its buildings shaped like its name. It made the original Big Hamburger, with its Big Barney being older than the Big Mac. Its mascots, such as Hamburger Hungry and Chicken Hungry, even look like McDonald’s characters. If you were eating healthy, it was the pioneers of the self-serve salad bar.
At its peak, it had hundreds of locations. However, these were franchised, and the licenses had an expiration date. When this happened, the Red Barn name disappeared, and the buildings became other restaurants. A couple continued for several decades as “The Farm,” but the last one closed in 2020.
