#37: Bacardi Rum is a Family Run Cuban Business
Bacardi rum, originally crafted in Cuba in the 19th century, is one of the island’s most famous exports. The Bacardi family played an active role in Cuban political life and initially supported Fidel Castro’s revolution during the 1950s, viewing him as a liberal reformer intent on breaking free from American economic dominance.

At that time, Castro had not publicly embraced communism, presenting himself instead as a nationalist pushing for sovereignty and reform. However, as his regime shifted ideologically, the Bacardi family fell out of favor. Their assets were seized, prompting them to relocate operations to Puerto Rico, where Bacardi rum continues to be produced.
