Surprisingly Creative Halloween Costumes That Deserve an Award

by Jessica Meyer

Every holiday has its magic; Christmas has the vibes of a winter wonderland (and the eggnog), Thanksgiving has the pumpkins and the magical autumn atmosphere and then there’s the Fourth of July, with the fireworks and barbecues. However, if you ask us, no holiday even comes close to Halloween – the one chance we get every year to unleash our creativity and be someone else for one night. Even if you’re not a fan of haunted houses, everyone loves Halloween.

Peek-a-Boo

When it comes to Halloween costumes, everyone wants to try and be the most original, no matter what. And even though it can be very challenging to come up with an original idea every year, it is important to remember that sometimes the best ideas are the simplest ones…

We’re sure that lots of pregnant women have done this before for their Halloween costumes, but something about this idea wins every time. We’re not sure if it is the shock factor of a literal baby trying to claw its way out of this woman’s stomach or that it is so simple, but it’s a 10/10 for us.

Where Are All the Swifties?

There are certain celebrities out there that have made a significant impact on the world in one way or another. Whether their influence has been through music, art, education, or even politics, influence can be clear to see. One way people like to pay their respects to these people is by mimicking them…

Whether or not you like Taylor Swift, there is no denying her rather impressive impact on the world. Her music has won several accolades, and she continues to inspire her fans every day. So it only makes sense that her fans dress up as her different characters from her video clips.

Robin and Steve

There is no denying that certain television shows have had a serious impact in recent years with their storylines and character development. No matter how much we might want to live the lives of those on screen, there is no real way that we can truly be them. But Halloween can always help…

If you have Stranger Things, then you know exactly who this couple is trying to be… Steve and Robin from Stranger Things work at an ice cream shop called Scoops Ahoy which actually a pretty big storyline in season 3 of the show. From the costume down to the props, this couple has done a pretty good job.

Gender Reveal Party

These days it can feel like certain people have taken things a little bit too far when it comes to celebrating specific occasions. Don’t get us wrong, we love any excuse to have a party, but some parties probably should never have started becoming part of the mainstream in the first place.

Some people like to dress up as crazy ideas for Halloween, and this was the craziest thing this person could think of. Is there any real need to have a gender reveal party for your unborn child? Considering that gender is a social construct, surely we can all just leave it up to the unborn child to decide what they want to do with their own lives.

The Sims

When we were younger, everyone loved playing the computer game “The Sims.” Even though they were different times, we still spent a lot of time each day on the computer playing games and interacting with friends in whatever ways we could. Those that used to play this game know the ins and outs of it like the back of their hand.

Even if you haven’t seen the sims, you might be able to understand what this costume is trying to depict… The major giveaway is the little green diamond on top of her head that allows people to know that she is online and ready to play. As kids, we would always try and make the characters in the game do things they shouldn’t have been doing…

Retired Hooters Waitress

In society, there are several references that everyone understands, regardless of where you might come from. Pop culture has ensured that even though we might all come from different places, we are able to be aware of the same things. And we’re pretty sure everyone will understand this costume…

In the early 2000s, the Hooters restaurant was everywhere… Everyone wanted to eat there, and many girls and women wanted to work there, although now it isn’t clear why they would have wanted to. This costume really highlights just how long it has been since the days that Hooters ruled the restaurant and pop culture world…

Coneheads

If you were born in the late 80s or the early 90s, then you were one of the lucky ones, my friend. Not only did you grow up in the golden age, where there was still a period without internet and when children still knew how to play outside, but some of the best television and films were released during this time.

The 1993 film Coneheads followed the story of an alien family that made its way to earth but had one very different feature to human beings… They’re cone-shaped heads. We’re sure that many people might not recognize these characters, but it is so worth it for those who do.

Thumb-Thumbs

When it comes to Halloween costumes, there are many people out there that take the opportunity to show some skin and wear something revealing. Whilst some people might choose to go down that road, others tend to go down a more calculated and thought-out road, which is much more entertaining.

Why is it that the best films all came out before the 2010s? The film Spy Kids came out in 2001 and was a true classic for all children at the time. Can you imagine children as spies? It was a true masterpiece. We’re not sure how they thought of it, but these girls somehow created the “Thumb Thumb” character into a costume, and now we know what we are dressing up as for Halloween this year.

Casey Becker and Scream

Whilst some major films might seem out-of-touch, contrite, and even inappropriate, it is important to remember that many films are a product of the time that they were made. So the next time you find yourself watching a film made 20 years earlier, keep in mind that the themes might seem a little weird for that reason.

Chances are that if you like horror or thriller films, then you have definitely seen the film, Scream. The film came out in 1996 and, whilst considered to be a great thriller, has also been the butt of many jokes throughout the years. But there really isn’t a more iconic costume than this one, is there?

Tweedledee and Tweedledum

We’re all familiar with the iconic duo Tweedledee and Tweedledum, who started their way in the literary world back in 1871. Although most people believe they were first introduced in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the stocky characters first appeared in Lewis Carroll’s 1871 sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There

Either way, the funny-looking duo has become so popular over the years, that Tweedledee and Tweedledum became a synonym for any couple that looks and acts alike, and, as you can see, they’ve become a popular choice for a Halloween costume. It might not be the most original costume out there, but the execution is almost flawless, and we always appreciate any literary reference.

The Wizard of Oz

No one can compete with Judy Garland, the original actress who portrayed Dorothy Gale in the 1939 Wizard of Oz, but if anyone comes close, it’s definitely this girl. She has the right looks for the part and even the right dog, so it seems as if it was her destiny to dress as Dorothy for Halloween, and we wouldn’t be surprised if she recycled this costume a couple of times.

Dorothy and her dog Toto are another famous literary duo, although quite different from Tweedledee and Tweedledum. The only thing missing from the photo are the yellow bricks, although those brick houses are probably the closest thing she could find, and she deserves a shout-out for the effort.

The Shining

We’ve already seen that any iconic literary couple makes a good Halloween costume, although this one isn’t as cheerful as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, nor is it as colorful as Dorothy and Toto. We’ve all read the novel by Stephen King or watched the Stanley Kubrick film adaptation, and we were all haunted by nightmares afterwards, which is why this seems like a questionable Halloween costume.

On the other hand, for many people, Halloween is all about haunted houses and spooky stories, in which case this costume makes perfect sense. These two friends took their costumes all the way – while they’re dressed as the creepy “come play with us” twins from The Shining, they might as well spook the hotel guests.

Adam and Barbara

Every holiday has its movies, from Home Alone to Gremlins, and we can’t think of a film that better suits the spirit of Halloween than Beetlejuice. The 1988 Tim Burton film (one of Winona Ryder’s first major roles, by the way), is everyone’s favorite. It’s hard not to enjoy the movie with the memorable characters and the colorful soundtrack.

This is why it’s not uncommon to see Beetlejuice costumes on Halloween. While the character of Beetlejuice isn’t the most original costume out there (although it’s a great one nonetheless), you don’t see a lot of the other characters gracing the streets during Halloween. This couple decided to express some creativity and dress up as the film’s “normal” couple – Adam and Barbara. If you ask us, the execution is flawless!

Mimes

Mime artists date back to Ancient Greece, when a single dancer was known as a “pantomimus.” They’ve taken on different shapes since, but the idea is the same – a person who uses mime as an artistic, theatrical performance. This group of friends decided to dress as mime artists for Halloween, a creative costume indeed.

There’s only one problem – traditionally, mime artists are silent throughout their performance, and convey emotions using mimes alone. We’re not sure these girls are willing to be silent all night, and speaking might ruin their costume’s authenticity. Nevertheless, this costume gets a high score on our list.

Peter Pan and his shadow

Peter Pan is one of the most beloved childhood characters around the world. Known as the boy who never grows up, the story has become a cultural symbol for youth and innocence. As you might remember from the story, Peter is followed by a shadow that represents Peter Pan’s attachment to the human world.

While it’s not uncommon to dress as Peter Pan for Halloween – both for children and adults – and a popular couples’ costume is Peter Pan and Wendy, a costume of Peter Pan and his shadow is something you don’t see every day! In this case, a father and his son created a one-of-a-kind Halloween costume of a beloved children’s tale.

Britney Spears at the 2001 VMAs

When it comes to finding the perfect Halloween costume can be a difficult and draining task. But more often than not, when people choose to dress up as something, or someone memorable, people tend to be pretty impressed by it. And we think that might be the case with this costume…

Everyone remembers Brintey Spears’ 2001 VMAs performance when she had a snake wrapped around her neck singing “I’m a slave 4 u”. Not only was the performance itself iconic, but her outfit was incredible, and this woman has done it justice. Her attention to detail is pretty spot on…

Congratulations!

Is there anything more exciting than having a baby? Sure, there are lots of different reasons why new parents might feel nervous, but the circle of life is one of the most precious and beautiful things there is on this planet. However, we’re not sure that the miracle of life needs to be flaunted everywhere…

Can you imagine seeing this costume at a Halloween party? The shock factor is definitely there, that’s for sure. Whilst we would never find ourselves in this costume, we can understand why some people might think that it is appealing. One thing’s for sure, people would be talking about this for days.

Eleven From Stranger Things

When it comes to thinking about Halloween costumes, people often get inspiration from different television shows and movies. People can draw inspiration from so many different characters and storylines that always seem to work wonders. But there’s one character who always manages to rule Halloween…

Where would the world be without Eleven from Stranger Things? She is the perfect costume for Halloween, without a doubt. Not only that, but she has so many iconic outfits and scenes to choose from… Whether it be from seasons 1, 2,3, or 4, she will always be one of the most iconic characters.

Ice, Ice, Baby

There comes a time in life when you stop dressing up as an individual and start dressing up as a family. Whilst this might sound lame, uninspiring, or even boring, there are plenty of different ways people can choose to take certain concepts, songs, or even characters and turn them into a family affair.

We’re not sure if this couple came up with this idea themselves or if they took it from somewhere, but it is incredible. Not only is it age-appropriate and funny, but it is also really creative. The second you read all of the words together, you can’t help but start singing the song out loud and busting a move.

Action Figurines

Things were much simpler back when we were children… From the things we used to do to the things that would bring us stress, everything was very different. And even though it might seem silly, there is something nice about being reminded of the good old days when we were children…

So why not dress up as your favorite childhood toy for Halloween as an adult? As children, these little green action figurines were everywhere… Even without thinking, this costume immediately takes us back to being in elementary school and playing with these small, plastic men.

Ironman

When it comes to dressing up for Halloween, many people choose to dress up as their icons and heroes. Considering it is the one night a year when we can choose to wear whatever we want, it is a pretty good excuse to dress up as someone who has the power to save the world from an evil force.

But when most people choose to dress up as their favorite superhero, they don’t usually look exactly like the original character. And something tells us that even though it looks so good, it can’t possibly be real. Whoever uploaded this picture obviously knows his way around photoshop… And to be honest, we’re not even mad about it.

Ladies of Encanto

There is no denying just how popular the Disney film, Encanto was all around the world. Regardless of your age or gender. everyone loved the film so much it was all anyone could talk about for months. So it only makes sense that for Halloween peopledrew inspiration from the amazing characters…

Encanto would be nothing without its strong. fiery and loving women. And it is safe to say that these women understood the assignment… Not only are the costumes on point, but the poses these women are amazing couldn’t be more accurate of the characters they are trying to portray.

The Women of Marvel

It is safe to say that when it comes to Marvel films, whilst we love all of the superheroes, no one does it quite as well as the women. No one can deny that it is a man’s world, but in the Marvel Universe it is fair game, and the female superheroes we have been given absolutely kick butt.

We love that this group of friends decided to dress up as the women of Marvel for Halloween. They might have some gaps in their costumes and whatnot, butt he overall idea is definitely there. Considering that it wasn’t always in the mainstream, it is so cool that women feel empowered by female superheroes…

Takes Ghosting to a Whole New Level…

There is no denying that the dating world these days is full of lots of surprises. Nothing is as simple as it once was… Gone are the days where you could walk into a bar and meet someone naturally and organically. Instead, your options are limited, can chances are you will find yourself on an app experiencing all of the good that comes with it.

If you have ever been on an app, then chances are that you know what it feels like to have been ghosted. We ove how this costume connects the original Halloween costume of a ghost with the idea that these days people ghost one another, and there is an actual term for it.

Mary Poppins

This Mary Poppins costume is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (which, if you remember, means wonderful). Another beloved childhood character is Mary Poppins, and like the other characters we’ve seen on the list, she has a few trademarks that are easy to recognize, from her clothes to her magical briefcase and most importantly, her umbrella.

Since the Disney classic was released in the sixties, Mary Poppins has become a household name in the U.S. and around the world. The musical film, which was later adapted to the theater, remains one of Disney’s most popular and beloved films to this day. Yet, for some reason, it’s not often that we see a Mary Poppins Halloween costume, let alone a costume this authentic.

Weather girl reporting a storm

At first glance, this looks like a photo of a weather girl reporting during a storm, with the wind blowing her hair, scarf and umbrella. That’s how good this costume is! This is a very realistic costume of a weather girl reporting during a storm – she even glued leaves and a newspaper to her clothes, to make it look like she’s standing in a storm.

This has got to be one of the most original costumes we’ve seen yet. While most people choose to dress as famous public figures, beloved TV or literary characters or superheroes, this woman decided to pay tribute to a population that never receives the acknowledgment they deserve: weathermen (and women).

The Wrecking Ball

We’re all familiar with Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” – one of her most popular hits, and arguably one of the biggest pop hits of the past years (you know how it goes, “I came in like a wrecking ball…” and so on). When the single was released in 2013, it was an immediate success not only thanks to the catchy lyrics and the upbeat tempo, but what caught the public’s attention was the music unusual video.

During the chorus, the video shows the singer swinging on a wrecking ball. This is certainly one of the most creative costumes we’ve seen yet, and it’s quite a good execution of the music video: had he just painted his face grey, we’d have no clue what he’s supposed to be, but the blonde barbie sitting on his head – representing the blonde Miley Cyrus – makes this costume a slam dunk.

The Statue of Liberty and an NYC tourist

When it comes to couples’ Halloween costume, usually there’s one side in the relationship that wants to do it and comes up with the ideas, while the other one side sits idly by, silently resenting the idea and waits for the holiday to be over. More often than not, it is the girl that pushes towards a couple’s costume, while the guy tries to object but eventually plays along.

This is yet another surprisingly creative costume, and if this was a real contest, and we were the judges, we’d be in a bind. This couple didn’t want to recycle another cliche couple’s costumes Like Barbie and Ken, Marge and Homer Simpson, Khaleesi and Khal Drogo and so on. That’s how they finally came up with this brilliant idea: an NYC tourist and The Statue of Liberty.

Scrubs

If you don’t know who Turk and J.D. are, we feel bad for you. The stars of the hospital sitcom Scrubs, J.D. and Turk are perhaps the most lovable TV friends. With all due respect to Troy and Abed (Community) and Joey and Chandler (Friends), if you ask us, J.D. and Turk are the most lovable TV friends. An intern and a surgeon, the two develop a meaningful friendship at the hospital where they both work.

If you’re looking for a Halloween costume with your best friend, Turk and J.D. are an obvious choice. They’re also somewhat easier to recreate than, say, Joey and Chandler or Troy and Abed, what with the scrubs and all. In this case, it’s not just the clothes, but somehow, these friends have an eerie resemblance to the actors of the show.

It’s Raining Men (Hallelujah)

Hands down, this must be the most creative costume we’ve seen so far, and topping this costume will be a challenge. This woman took an iconic song and turned it into a costume. The only thing like that we’ve seen so far is the wrecking ball costume, but this is by far a better execution, and more importantly, a better song choice.

The popular song by the American duo The Weather Girls was released in the early 1980s and has been a hit ever since; the single was considered one of the greatest hits of the 1980s as well as the 2000s. This woman took the famous song lyrics and very cleverly turned them into a Halloween costume, and we’re awed by her creativity (and now we can’t get the song out of our heads).

The Little Mermaid on land

Any Disney princess makes an ideal Halloween costume, whether it’s Bell from The Beauty and the Beast (which could also be a couple’s costume), Cinderella or The Little Mermaid. However, most girls who dress as Ariel choose to go as the mermaid version – not the human version. As you might recall, Ariel gives up her voice in exchange for human legs, and goes through a life-changing experience on the shore.

The Little Mermaid costumes might not be the most original, but this girl gave her own, unique twist to the costume. What makes this costume deserve our attention is her attention to details: the red hair that’s exactly the right shade, the ropes holding Ariel’s improvised dress and the best part – the crab purse that represents Ariel’s loyal friend Sebastian.

Phileas Fogg

You must be familiar with Phileas Fogg, the protagonist of Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in Eighty Days. Dressing up as a Disney princess or a famous figure is great, but the best Halloween costumes are usually the ones that allow the imagination to soar high. In this case, what better way to let your imagination fly than taking it on a hot-air balloon ride?

What makes this costume so great, other than the original idea, of course, is the effort and thought behind this: this woman didn’t just dress up as the inspiring character of Phileas Fogg, but she dressed up as a whole scene from the book: Fogg traveling above the clouds in his hot-air balloon.

Amazon Prime

The clever thing about this costume is that it’s a pun: this person took the Amazon delivery service Amazon Prime and the Transformers’ character Optimus Prime, and created this strange hybrid. It’s part robot, part Amazon delivery service, and it’s mostly hilarious. Even if you aren’t familiar with the Transformers, you can still enjoy this costume.

Amazon Prime takes pride in its quality service, but perhaps if they hired the crew of Transformers, their deliveries would be even faster and more efficient! Just a thought. I wonder what inspires one to dress for Halloween as the Amazon Prime delivery service, but I guess that’s the beauty of Halloween – everyone dresses as their own, personal heroes and role models.

The Son of Man

We didn’t expect to see so many works of art on this list (actually, we didn’t expect to see any of them), but it’s a delightful surprise. The Son of Man is another famous painting that doesn’t require much explanation; even if you aren’t familiar with the artist or the origin of the painting, you must have seen it before.

The Son of Man is the most famous painting of surrealist painter René Magritte, and it received many tributes, recreations and allusions throughout the years and in pop-culture, and, as it turns out, in Halloween costumes. This guy recreated the painting perfectly, complete with the bowler hat, the suit with the red tie, the clouds in the background, and of course, the green apple.

Beetlejuice

This person is taking the Beetlejuice costume to the next level. Since Tim Burton’s horror-comedy came to theaters in the late eighties, the eccentric character of Beetlejuice has become a popular Halloween costume. We’ve seen an Adam-and-Barbara costume, and this list wouldn’t be complete without a Beetlejuice costume.

Most people who want to go as Beetlejuice – a very appropriate choice for Halloween – take the easy way and put on a purple or green striped suit with a messy hair wig and a bit of makeup. This person took his Beetlejuice costume to the next level, and depicted one specific scene from the movie, with a carousel hat that lights us and long, scary snake arms.

Oogie Boogie

For years, parents have used all kinds of mythical or made-up creatures to get their kids to go to sleep, from the Sandman to the Bogeyman and the classic monster under the bed. Personally, we don’t understand how the idea of these scary creatures could get any child to behave and go to bed, but some traditions you can’t argue with.

Not to be confused with The Boogeyman, Oogie Boogie is a villain character from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. It is believed that Oogie Boogie (despite his cute name) is the most menacing of all Halloween villains; unlike the other scary creatures who’re just looking to have a good time, Oogie Boogie is truly evil!

Sanderson Sisters

As we’ve already seen, spooky films such as Sharkando, Beetlejuice and The Boogeyman are a common inspiration for Halloween costumes, which is why it only makes sense that the 1993 live-action film Hocus Pocus would also be a popular choice for a costume. The film, starring Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker, follows a comic trio of witches who are resurrected on the night of Halloween.

The villainous, yet comic, witches try to take over a small town, using their spellbook – which also makes an important appearance in this costume. A witch costume on Halloween isn’t something we haven’t seen before, but this isn’t just another witch costume – it’s a Hocus Pocus costume with great attention to detail!

The Rainbow Fish

If you read The Rainbow Fish growing up, it shouldn’t be difficult to figure out this costume. Evidently, this girl decided to dress up as the unique fish from The Rainbow Fish, a German children’s book and a children’s TV series of the same name. If you aren’t familiar with the book, it tells the story of a fish that had unique, shiny scales, quite similar to this girl’s costume.

He was reluctant to share his shiny scales with his friends, since he feels as if they make him unique, until he finally realized his friends are worth a lot more than shiny scales. Ultimately, the moral of the story is teaching children about the importance of sharing. This girl must’ve been a fan of the book growing up, as she looks just like the shiny fish from the illustration cover.

Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie is a versatile actress; if you watched her portrayal of professional figure skater Tonya Harding in the biopic I, Tonya, or her memorable performance alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street, you might find it hard to believe she’s the actress behind the character of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.

Although the super-villain dates back to comic books from the 1930s, the character of Harley Quinn received widespread recognition in 2016 after Margot Robbie’s performance in the popular superhero film Suicide Squad. Since then, we’ve seen quite a lot of these costumes during Halloween, with girls trying to imitate the style of the super-villain. This one, however, is one of the best we’ve seen yet.

Indiana Jones and Short Round

Who doesn’t love Indiana Jones? One of the most iconic characters in film history, professor of archaeology by day and a brave adventurer by night, the character that is most famously depicted by Harrison Ford makes an appearance every Halloween since the first film in the franchise was released to theaters.

You can’t argue that Indiana Jones isn’t an inspiring character, and Halloween is our one chance every year to be someone we look up to. His iconic characteristics include his fedora hat, his bullwhip and his sidekick, Short Round. No superhero is complete without his sidekick, and luckily for his guy, he had the perfect man (or dog) for the job.

Clueless

Cher Horowitz was to many women around the country what Indiana Jones was to men – a role model. The protagonist of the nineties hit comedy Clueless, portrayed by Alicia Silverstone, was a role model for any young girl watching the film, with her dreamy closet, her sense of style of most importantly, her confidence.

If you can dress up as Indiana Jones, why not dress up for Halloween as Cher Horowitz? If you want to make it a friends’ costume, you could always go as Cher and her best friend, Dionne. The costume works better if you’re blonde, but with the right outfit – and the right attitude – anyone can be Cher for one night a year.

Gone with the wind

Some people prefer to go with a worn-out, cliche costume on Halloween just to avoid having to explain your costume all night. When you go with a creative costume, you can expect a shower of compliments, but you’re also in for quite a lot of stares and nagging questions. These people are in for a shower of questions, but luckily, they came prepared with an umbrella.

They went as “people caught in the wind” – this resembles the “weather reporter in a storm” we’ve seen earlier, and the execution is just as good! The man glued his tie to make it look as if its blown in the wind, and the woman glued her hair with gel to make it look realistic. All in all, the result is quite impressive.

Works of art

Every time we thought we’ve seen every possible costume, people come up with the next creative invention. Who would’ve thought of dressing up for Halloween as classical art? These two friends decided to be classy this Halloween, and go as two of the most famous paintings ever created: the Mona Lisa by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci and Girl with a Pearl Earring by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.

Perhaps these girls are art majors? That would explain a lot. Either way, this is a costume you don’t see every day (or every year). Two of the most famous paintings in the world don’t require an explanation, but these women might have to answer the question of how did they come up with the idea and how they managed to create these costumes so accurately.

Filter and No Filter

There are a lot of great costumes on this list, but if we had to choose our absolute favorite, it would be this one. We’ll start with the creative idea that’s so relevant to our times: in our modern day of social media, it feels like everything we see goes through a filter. Nothing is real. Nothing is authentic. We’re living in a filtered world.

This couple has found a way to poke fun at that notion. We don’t need to take it too seriously – we know people on Instagram use filters, and that’s a part of the platform. Another great thing about this costume, besides the idea, is the execution: the look on this guy’s face is priceless, and it really completes the ensemble. Really, they did a great job! Finally, two people who don’t take themselves too seriously.

Old Lady

This costume is so realistic, you probably don’t recognize the woman behind the makeup. We’ll give you a hint: she’s an international supermodel. Don’t beat yourself if you still can’t figure it out, since this costume is just too good. This is supermodel Heidi Klum wearing old-lady makeup and clothes.

We didn’t include celebrities on this list, since, in a way, they have an unfair advantage, but we had to include this costume since it was just too good to ignore. Heidi Klum is known among her friends and colleagues as the queen of Halloween, since every year she masters the holiday with yet another incredibly realistic costume.

Sharknado

In many ways, Sharknado is a cult film. Although it’s not an award-winning film, but a silly dark comedy, you won’t find a person in the country who hasn’t watched the 2013 movie. If by any chance you aren’t familiar with the film, you can understand by its name, and by this creative costume, what “sharknado” stands for – a tornado of sharks.

Two of the most prominent shark-related horror films are Sharknado and Jaws, which both received a cult following thanks to their theatrical qualities and hyperbolical premise. The question remains – how does one dress as Sharknado for Halloween? This guy has created the perfect shark-tornado costume from netting and plastic sharks.

Operation

There are quite a few games that withstand the test of time, and Operation is one of them. It’s one of those games that never gets old, no matter how old you get. The board game was first introduced to the market in the mid-sixties (did you know it was that long ago?), and children are still familiar with it today.

This couple was probably in a nostalgic mood when they decided to dress up for Halloween as the classic board game. However, while most of us felt pretty anxious approaching the delicate pieces with the tweezers, about to perform an “operation” for the first time, this “doctor” seems happy and relaxed. There’s an interesting take on the game.

Ghosting

In many ways, modern-day dating is easier than it was in the past – the many dating apps out there allow us to meet people we wouldn’t have met otherwise, and make things easier in many ways – but some say dating has lost some of the magic and romance it used to possess in the pre-technology age.

One of the downsides of Tinder, as opposed to dating in the pre-Tinder age, is that you can ghost someone or be ghosted. For those of you who aren’t familiar with those terms, ghosting is when someone disappears – becomes a ghost – and stops replying to your messages. Dressing as a ghost for Halloween isn’t very original, but dressing as Tinder ghosting and a ghosting victim – like these two friends – is quite creative.

Lego Family

Much like Operation – and perhaps even more so – Lego is one of those eternal games that never gets old. The original Lego dates back almost a hundred years, but the plastic characters we’re familiar with were first introduced in Denmark in the late 1940s, and it was in the early sixties that it arrived to the U.S.

It slowly spread around the country (and the world) and captured the hearts of children and adults. What’s beautiful about Lego is that it allows you to unleash your imagination and play as you like, creating characters, places and stories of your own. This family decided to have a family-costume for Halloween, and when they couldn’t agree on anything else, they finally realized they should go as a Lego family – that way, every member of the family can have their own choice of character – and even the dog was included in the costume.

Roller Coaster

Roller coasters – and amusement parks – are not for everyone. Usually, they are more suitable for the adventurous people out there, the ones who aren’t afraid of taking risks or getting nauseated. This might not a real roller coaster, but we can tell the guys in this photo are big fans of roller coasters! At least, we can tell they’ve been on one.

This is indeed one of the most creative costumes we’ve seen – have you ever seen anything like that? It’s fun, it’s energizing, it’s the whole package of Halloween costumes. However, there’s only one problem – it seems like it would be difficult (not to say impossible) to dance in this thing, in case they’re planning to attend a Halloween party.

Van Gogh Self Portrait

Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh is one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art; he belonged to the post-impressionist movement, and some of his most famous paintings include The Starry Night, The Potato Eaters, the landscapes and flower paintings, and his numerous self-portraits.

One of the unique characteristics of his paintings was his technique of visible brush strokes, and this guy has managed to recreate Van Gogh’s brush strokes beautifully. As many artists, Van Gogh didn’t receive much recognition during his life, and only became famous after his death. Today, everyone has heard of the painter, but during his lifetime, you wouldn’t see anyone dressed as Van Gogh for Halloween.

Terrance and Philip

South Park fans out there are familiar with the comic duo Terrance and Philip. In the show, the boys are big fans of the Canadian duo, who host a rather inappropriate TV show. The animated sitcom is wildly successful and has received acclaim and awards throughout the years and its 23 seasons, despite the criticism and controversies surrounding it.

The show is often engaging with taboo matters and exhibits dark humor, and people complain the show is not educational and inappropriate for children and teens. Yet, it has a wide fan base around the world, so much so, that the cult sitcom has been a popular choice of Halloween costume for years. While most people dress as one of the main characters, this couple decided to depict Terrance and Philip.

Gumball Machines

There are many options for a friends’ Halloween costume; you can go as a TV dynamic duo, you can go as food (for example, a hot dog and a bun), you can go as any two items that complement each other – the options are endless. These girls decided to go as vintage gumball machines. How creative is that?

We know what you must be wondering right now, because we’re probably wondering the same thing: are those real gumballs glued to their shirts? It seems as if they put a lot of effort into this costume – they even painted their nails in different colors to look like gumballs – and so we’d like to believe those are indeed real gums.

Ratatouille

If you haven’t watched Ratatouille yet, cancel your plans for tonight! No need to thank us. The Pixar animated film follows a visionary, innocent rat who has a passion for cooking and dreams of becoming a chef. He teams up with a young garbage boy who knows nothing about cooking, and they help each other in ways they could’ve never imagined.

This father and his baby brought the film to life when they dressed up for Halloween as Remy, the intelligent rat, and Alfredo Linguini, the humble garbage boy. If you watched the film, you know the costume is spot-on thanks to the father’s curly hair, which matched Linguini’s hair. This must be the sweetest costume on the list.

Maleficent

We know a witch costume isn’t the most original one out there, and after everything we’ve already seen on the list, it would take a lot more than that to impress us, and yet we felt as if this costume deserves a shout out, if only because the execution is impeccable. While most young girls and women want to be a princess on Halloween, this girl decided she wanted to be the antagonist for a change.

We’re not sure you can find Maleficent costumes in the store as easily as you can find a princess costume – because who wants to be the evil fairy rather than a princess? It looks like this girl has made her horns and outfit from scratch, which is quite impressive, and we also appreciate her giving the stage to the antagonist.

Larry David

Larry David is one of the most acclaimed and well-known comedians in the country, mostly thanks to his work on the popular nineties sitcom Seinfeld and Saturday Night Live. David has been a part of the entertainment industry for three decades now, and his large contribution to the industry has gained him many awards and accolades.

Many celebrities and public figures have a unique style that characterizes them – for example, Steve Jobs with his jeans and black turtleneck shirts. For Larry David, although his outfits seem more than casual, we immediately recognized him for his outfit, his bald cap and his characteristic pose. All in all, this guy nailed the costume.

Kit Kat Bars

Everyone has their own favorite chocolate bar, although choosing only one favorite is almost as hard as choosing between your parents. What’s great about the Kit Kat bar is that you can cut it in the middle and share it with a friend. It’s true that you can share any candy bar with a friend, but Kit Kat was designed this way, to encourage sharing.

Other than that, we also like the simplicity of Kit Kat. Unlike other fancy candy bars, which contain nuts or creams, Kit Kat is delicious because it’s simple. For the same reasons (probably) these girls decided to dress for Halloween this year as a couple of Kit Kat bars, or actually one Kit Kat bar cut in the middle.

Juno and Bleeker

When it was released to theaters in 2007, Juno quickly became a box-office and a critical success; the drama-comedy won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and three additional nominations. It’s no wonder, then, that Juno and Bleeker – the film’s protagonists – became a popular Halloween costume.

The wise and witty Juno and the humble, innocent Bleeker make one of Hollywood’s cutest couples. Despite their lack of communication, which seems to be a big part of their problems, at the end of the film they manage to tell each other how they feel; throughout this nine months journey they grow together and learn a lot from one another.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

The popular nineties sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was the show that put Will Smith on the Hollywood map; the show’s success is what encouraged Smith to pursue an acting career. The show was a big hit during the nineties, and it still runs in streaming services today, with fans watching the show for the second or third time and reliving its greatest moments.

It’s no surprise, then, that fans around the country dress as the Fresh Prince and his gang for Halloween. This group of friends pulled off Carlton, Jazz and Will, and if you ask us, they nailed the costume – not only the clothes, but the moves and the iconic poses. If you had to dress as your favorite TV character for Halloween, what would it be?

Bonfire and S’mores

There are a lot of clichés we say about a couple who seem like the right match: they fit together like a lid to a pot, they’re a match made in heaven, they’re like two peas in a pod, two pieces of a puzzle and so on and so forth. One thing we don’t say but would make a nice addition to this list of clichés is “they fit together like s’mores and a bonfire.”

What’s a better fit than a bonfire and s’mores? No camping trip is complete without a bonfire, just like no bonfire is complete without s’mores. We appreciate the originality and creativity behind this costume, and they’ve obviously created the outfits themselves, which deserves our applauds as well, but in a sense, this costume is almost too cheesy.

Cleopatra and Caesar

When this girl suggested to her boyfriend the idea of dressing up as Cleopatra and Caesar, she meant the Roman general, not the salad dressing, but we can see how it might be confusing. When her boyfriend showed up dressed like a salad seasoning, she couldn’t hide her disappointment, as you can see in the photo below.

Perhaps he knew she was talking about the Roman dictator, but he didn’t know how to make it happen. Either way, the costume still works as it is, and in a way, it even makes it more original! Who needs another Cleopatra and Caesar at their party? This Caesar dressing, on the other hand, is more fun and unique.

Black Swan

The 2010 psychological drama Black Swan is a must-watch. We know we said the same thing about Ratatouille, but take our word for it. The film, starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, follows the New York City Ballet dancers as they prepare for a production of Tchaikovsky’s iconic Swan Lake ballet.

The ballet revolves around the delicate, white swan as opposed to the dark swan, and the two ballet dancers are slowly consumed by their on-stage roles. The film was a raging success, and sure enough, the black and white swans became popular Halloween costumes. This is one of the best costumes we’ve seen yet, as they are quite true to the film.

Edward Scissorhands

It seems as if every Tim Burton film makes for a great Halloween costume. The 1990 Tim Burton film Edward Scissorhandsstarring Johnny Depp as the lead role of the gentle-soul Edward Scissorhands – received wide acclaim throughout the nineties, from both critics and fans around the world.

The title character – Edward Scissorhands – is not exactly a human, nor is he a machine. The unfinished creation of an old inventor, Edward has scissors for hands. In many ways, this is the kind of character that is perfect for Halloween costumes – he’s just the right amount of scary, but deep down he’s a lovable and inspiring character.

Miss Frizzle

Many of us grew up on The Magic School Bus, a children’s book franchise from the eighties that was adopted as a TV series in the mid-nineties. If you’ve ever watched the show, you should be familiar with Ms. Frizzle, the school teacher who takes her class on unique, educating experiences and trips to extraordinary places (such as the interior of the human body).

This woman must have been a fan of the show growing up, or maybe she’s a school teacher, and she was inspired by Ms. Frizzle. Either way, this isn’t a costume you see every day, and we’re happy for the nostalgic throwback to the beloved TV show. If you’re a parent or a grandparent, you can watch it with your kids.

Where the Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are is a famous children’s book written by Maurice Sendak and published in 1963. Upon its release, the book was considered controversial and banned from schools and libraries, but critics quickly understood the importance of its psychological message for children. Since the late sixties, the book has sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide.

All this introduction was to say how much we love this Where the Wild Things Are costume. There’s nothing like taking a favorite childhood book come to life one night a year, and this father decided to teach his child about the book before she could even read it, bu dressing for Halloween as Max and Carol. We’re not sure the baby understands what’s going on, but at least her father is having the time of his life.

Universal Health Care

Get it? She’s universal health care! More often than not, the best costumes are the ones that aren’t obvious and require an explanation. It took us a couple of minutes to figure out this costume, and it was worth it. Whether or not you agree with the idea of universal health care, you have to admit this is a unique costume.

This woman is wearing a dress with a pattern of the galaxy – the universe – complete with a doctor’s stethoscope, a medical briefcase and other medical accessories. We have no idea how she came up with the idea – perhaps she’s a doctor, and this is an issue of concern for her – but it doesn’t matter, either way, it’s a great costume.

Bluth’s Frozen Banana

You might be familiar with Bluth’s Original Frozen Banana stand from the sitcom Arrested Development. In the show, the family owns a frozen banana stand, which is the pride of the Bluth family and an important part of its heritage. Avid fans of the show are aware of the long and intricate history of the frozen banana srand.

Although the sitcom was renewed by Netflix in 2013 and ran in the streaming service until 2019, it wasn’t as widely popular as other sitcoms. Yet, this loyal fan decided to pay tribute to the show this Halloween, and dressed up as the iconic Bluth Original Frozen Banana Stand.

Saw

For some unexplained reason, there’s something terrifying about dolls. Over the years, they’ve been depicted in horror films such as Saw and Chucky, and they haunt us in our dreams. There’s something very disturbing about their polished features, their empty gaze and their fake smile, and the idea of dolls coming to life has served as the premise for Hollywood movies for years.

In a way, Halloween is supposed to be scary – as much as we like dressing up in fun costume, essentially, part of Halloween is about haunted houses and scary stories. This is why a Saw doll costume is ideal for Halloween. This girl dressed up as Billy from the horror film franchise, and her makeup is so good, it’s sending shivers down our spine. We’re not complaining, after all, isn’t that what Halloween is all about?

A Cow Abducted by Aliens

We’ve had plenty of creative costume ideas on the list, and asking us to choose the best one would simply be unfair, but this costume would definitely make the top five. There are endless conspiracy theories out there about the existence of aliens, and over the years, Hollywood films have shown us what it might be like if they did exist and happen to visit our planet.

This girl decided to create her own version of alien abduction for Halloween. She dressed up as a cow being abducted by aliens! How do people come up with these ideas? We’ve heard stories about cows being abducted and returned to earth as aliens, and this girl took it to the next level with her costume.
