#3: The Sphinx vs. Tourists
The Great Sphinx of Giza is an instantly recognizable milestone of human engineering. Just by looking at it, pretty much everyone knows what and where this monument is. The thing is, most of us forget how astonishingly large this ancient monument is. The tourists in the bottom-left of this photograph only reach the top of the statue’s toes!

The Great Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt. It was carved around 2500 BC, making it about 4,500 years old! It was most likely carved directly out of the bedrock of a plateau where Ancient Egyptians mined limestone for the construction of the pyramids in the area. The Great Sphinx is 250 feet long and 66 feet high. No wonder those people look so small in comparison.
