#27: An Octobass
People tend to push the envelope and see how far they can go. The drive to push further is what creates innovation and invention, after all. This massive instrument is a result of someone’s daring creativity. It’s not a giant cello. It’s an instrument all its own. Say hello to the octobass.

This instrument is so large that it requires the player to operate a series of levers and pedals. It’s an extremely rare instrument. The Montreal Symphony Orchestra is the only orchestra in the world to own one, pictured above. The first octobass was invented in Paris in 1850. We can’t imagine why this giant, expensive instrument didn’t catch on.
