March 21, 2021 by Sarah Carter

We’ve shared some amazing facts on the site before, but today we wanted to focus on some fun facts about cats. Cats are interesting pets to have in the home. Each comes with unique personality traits and interesting desires.

Some cats are overly affectionate while others prefer to have you pay attention to them on their terms. Some cats enjoy the ability to stay indoors while others have an innate desire to be outside. No matter what the personality of your cat is, these fun facts about cats will entertain you while letting you learn more about this wonderful household pet.

9,500 Years

That’s the number of years that we have known a domesticated cat to exist. In 2005, archaeologists unearthed a cat that lived as a pet in Egypt. The cat was dated to be around 9,500 years old.

Sleep a Lot

Cats spend 70% of their life sleeping. Talk about feeling jealous! These furry felines truly spend more time sleeping than engaging with their owners, yet we still love our pet cats more than anything.

A Cat Mayor

Yes, it’s true! A small town in Alaska named an orange tabby, Stubbs, mayor of their town. This cat stayed mayor for 20 years.

48.5 Inches

That’s the length of the longest ever pet cat recorded. This was a Maine Coon called Stewie. Usually, domesticated cats are considered dainty and small, but not Stewie!

Richest Cat

The richest domesticated cat in the world had a whopping 7 million Euros. His name is Blackie and when his millionaire owner passed away, he left his money to his cat while refusing to recognize any human family member.

Giraffes and Camels

You’re probably wondering what giraffes and camels have to do with your pet cat, but apparently, cats walk like these two animals. The way cats walk is similar to that of only two other animals on Earth, giraffes, and camels.

Isaac Newton

We bet you didn’t know that Isaac Newton was the first to invent the cat door! It’s true. He was working at the University of Cambridge when cats kept scratching at his door. He called a carpenter and had him install two holes into the door so the cats could come and go, without disrupting his work.

Space Cat

In 1963 a cat went to space! The first and only cat to go to space was named Felicette but known as Astrocat and is most known as the first and only cat to ever venture into outer space.

Shaved Eyebrows

We’ve learned that ancient Egyptians used to shave their eyebrows off when a beloved cat passed away. This was part of the family’s mourning process anytime a family pet died.

These are just some of the fun facts about cats we wanted to share with you. We hope that these fun facts have helped you learn something new today.
