#24: Benihana
In 1964, Hiroaki “Rocky” Aoki, a former wrestler with big dreams, brought a bold new dining experience to New York City, founding Benihana with just $10,000 he earned from selling ice cream. Blending Japanese cuisine with theatrical teppanyaki cooking, he turned every meal into a show.

A glowing 1965 review skyrocketed Benihana’s popularity, attracting legends like Muhammad Ali and The Beatles. Beyond the restaurant world, Aoki’s legacy lived on through his famous children, including DJ Steve Aoki and actress/model, Devon Aoki. What started as one man’s vision became an international sensation.
