Facts About Flying Squirrels

December 26, 2021 by brandyellen

There are approximately 20 different species of flying squirrels around the world.

Flying squirrels have a furry, parachute-like membrane that stretches between their front and back legs which helps them glide up to 45 meters (150 ft).

They can also steer themselves while in flight by moving their tail and adjusting their body position.

Flying squirrels use their gliding membrane to jump from tree to tree, or to escape danger.

They are active at night and feed mainly on nuts, berries, and insects.

Flying squirrels build nests out of leaves and twigs in trees or in sheltered areas on the ground.

The gestation period for flying squirrels is about 44 days, and they give birth to 2-5 young.

Young flying squirrels are weaned at around 8 weeks old, and are fully mature at 6 months old.

Flying squirrels can live for up to 10 years in the wild.

Do you know what a flying squirrel is?

If not, don’t worry – many people don’t! Flying squirrels are rodents that can fly, though they do not actually fly like birds or bats. Instead, flying squirrels use a furry parachute-like membrane to travel from tree to tree quickly and efficiently. They are nocturnal animals (which means they only come out at night) that mainly eat nuts, berries, and insects.

Flying squirrels are not endangered, but they are considered a “species of least concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). That means they are not currently facing any major threats to their survival and are likely to continue existing in the wild for the foreseeable future.

Many people started having flying squirrels as exotic pets as they’re sold in the pet trade industry. They are relatively easy to care for and make interesting pets.

How long do flying squirrels live?

Flying squirrels have an average lifespan of 6 months to 10 years in the wild, but may live up to 13.5 years in captivity.

Are flying squirrels nocturnal?

Yes! Most mammals are active during the day and sleep at night, so it is usually safe for them to come out when it’s dark.

In conclusion, flying squirrels are fascinating creatures that are well worth getting to know. If you’re ever lucky enough to see one in the wild, be sure to take a moment to appreciate this unique and amazing animal.
