#17: That’s Good to Know
The lifespan of a honeybee is relatively short, consisting of distinct stages. The worker honeybees, which are the ones you often see in your yard, typically live for about 4 to 6 weeks during the summer months. However, the last 2 to 3 weeks of their lives are particularly demanding and mark a significant change in their roles.

In the first half of their lives, these bees work as foragers, collecting nectar and pollen while also caring for the hive. In the latter part of their lives, they transition to become guard bees, defending the hive against intruders. This shift is a testament to the intricate division of labor within a bee colony, where each bee’s role changes as it ages, contributing to the overall success and survival of the hive.
