Having a beloved pet dog is quite common for sitting presidents, and FDR appears to have loved his furry friend as much as anyone else. He even used taxpayer money to send a destroyer ship to rescue his dog when he was stranded in the Aleutian Islands, or so we are led to believe.

The truth behind this story is that it likely never happened. Instead, the idea that FDR spent time and money to rescue his dog was a made-up slander story by his republican rivals, who, no doubt, wanted to delegitimize him. When you recall that World War II was ongoing at the time, don’t you think their time could have been better spent on other projects? Even though we’ll probably never know the truth, it is nice to think FDR would do anything for his puppy!
