#4: This or That Egg?
Have you ever heard of the elephant bird? Formally known as Aepyornis maximus, the elephant bird is an extinct flightless bird that once lived in Madagascar. If you look these birds up, their skeletons look a lot like our modern-day emus or ostriches. The thing is, elephant birds were on a completely different level. Just look at the archaeological remains of their eggs.
The egg on the left is a preserved elephant egg. The one on the right is a normal-sized egg from an average bird. The elephant bird egg is the largest-known egg produced by any species on the planet. It’s big enough to fit up to seven ostrich eggs inside. The elephant bird is thought to have gone extinct around 1000 CE due to human influence.
