20. Interpreter
Hiring a translator to accompany you on a trip where you don’t know the language would be a huge mistake! Unless you plan to spend the trip writing everything down and reading the translator’s handwriting, you want an interpreter. We know. It’s shocking, but translators and interpreters are not the same things.
And while we’re at it, let’s clear up another misconception about interpreters. They go through a lot of training to do their jobs. Even if they were born bilingual, it doesn’t make them either a translator or an interpreter. Bilingual folks might be able to tell you what’s being said, but only schooling makes you an interpreter.
