#27: The Location of Christopher Columbus’ Santa Maria
Locating shipwrecks is a near-impossible job. There are so many factors involved in trying to resolve something as big as a shipwreck that the chances of ever finding what you’re looking for are very slim. However, that didn’t stop Barry Clifford and his team of archeologists from finding Christopher Columbus’ boat, the Santa Maria.
The Santa Maria went missing in 1492 when it sunk near Hati. Christopher Columbus recorded different things about Santa Maria in his journal in detail, which helped researchers and historians understand different things about the vessel. In 2003, the team led by Barry Clifford found what was thought to be the vessel, and then in 2014, it was announced that the wreckage most likely belonged to Columbus as it had many of the aforementioned accessories from his journal.
